Year Four In a Daze

After an extremely busy summer that included David's graduation from SUNY Oswego, a trip to Acadia National Park, a formal public reading of my new play "Well Respected Man", and attending a number of theater productions and other artistic endeavors; we traveled back to Durham last week.  The trip was extremely boring and stressful with huge traffic tie-ups along he I-95 corridor.  (The only time we seem to be able to have an uneventful trip on I-95 is when we travel at night) Anyway, we're back in the heat and humidity of North Carolina for Nan's fourth year as a fellow in the Thompson Writing Program at  Duke University.
Duke sports had a good summer at the Olympics, with two of our divers winning medals and Coach K leading the men's basketball team to gold.  The Fall sports were underway even before we got back to Durham and on-campus activities abound.  Last weekend the women's volleyball team had a scrimmage, so we got to see some of the new players.  The preseason rankings have them as 4th in the ACC.  After watching the scrimmage, we set out for the football indoor practice facility for the annual "meet and greet" with the coaches and players.
I went to both the volleyball and football events with my friends Herb(Crazy Towel Guy) and Spiro.  The next day we attended the first women's home soccer game.  It turned into an 8 to 0 rout of Elon, a university in nearby Burlington, NC.
In addition to the on campus events, Nan and I took in a ballgame at The Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Here's Nan in front of the stadium with her Bulls hat on.  The game featured a lot of offense with 7 home runs and a 9 to 6 final score with the Bulls on the short-end of that score,  The stadium is in an area of Durham which is called the American Tobacco Campus.  They took the old tobacco warehouses and renovated them into offices, restaurants, and galleries.  It features music in the open air most Fridays and is pleasant to visit.  This year they have a number of painted bulls on display.  Of course I posed before the Duke bull.

Now that we're back in Durham, I'll be posing weekly summaries of our comings and goings.
